Richard Hovey

Richard Hovey, BEd, MA, PhD, is an associate professor with the Division of Oral Health and Society, Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University. Richard’s research utilizes philosophical hermeneutics and phenomenology to concentrate on bridging gaps among theories, philosophies and practices in healthcare, communities and individuals. Topics of interest include chronic illness / pain, patient and health professional education, communication, leadership, interdisciplinary team building and Two-Eyed Seeing.
Specific to this project, Richard brings his background in adaptive physical education (McGill University) and previous experience as a faculty member Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies in the Faculty of Medicine with the University of Calgary. Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies scholars ask questions such as: How can families affected by chronic health concerns / disability participate fully in their communities? Do stigmas associated with disabilities influence social policy? How can society adapt to the needs of impaired people? Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies examines the economic, social and political forces that serve to marginalize people.
