Frequently asked questions:
1. What happens during a tutorial?
Depending on your specific needs and the piece of work you bring with you, tutors will show you how to organize your ideas, express yourself clearly, make convincing arguments, and reach the right audience. We also teach writing skills that will help you to identify common grammatical and structural errors. We work with both native and non-native English speakers, and we tutor writing in all subjects. If you are seeking assistance with discipline-specific content rather than writing, please see FAQ #8 below.
Please note that the MWC Tutorial Service is not a proofreading and editing service. Tutoring is an active teaching and learning opportunity designed to empower students to improve their own proofreading and editing skills. Accordingly, tutors will not "correct" your draft assignments. Rather, our tutors will model structurally and grammatically coherent sentences and paragraphs with a view to empowering you to learn how to write clear, concise, and engaging prose.
2. What should I bring with me to my tutorial appointment?
You should bring with you any writing that you have done so far as well as the assignment instructions/guidelines (if applicable). We also urge you to come with specific questions and a reasonably clear idea of what you would like to work on. We will work with you at any stage of the writing process, from outlining to revision.
3. How do I book a tutorial appointment?
McGill students may sign up for appointments online at the following link: http://webiset.ca/ScheduleIt/
4. How do I cancel my appointment?
If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so ONLINE at http://webiset.ca/ScheduleIt/. Since the tutorial service is in very high demand, it is essential that you cancel your appointment as far in advance as possible so that other students have a chance to register for that time-slot. If you do not attend your appointment AND fail to cancel it ONLINE more than once, you will not be permitted to use the tutorial service until the following semester.
5. Where do I meet with my tutor?
At the McGill Downtown Campus, tutorials are held in Rooms 22A and 22B, located directly across from the McGill Writing Centre in the Group Study Zone. The McGill Writing Centre is located in Redpath Library. You can find our location on the following map: https://secureweb.mcgill.ca/mwc/sites/mcgill.ca.mwc/files/redpath_map.pdf.
At the McGill MacDonald Campus, tutorials are held in Room 202 in the MacDonald Library, located in the Barton Building.
6. How many appointments per semester may I book?
In order to ensure that all students have reasonable access to the tutorial service, students are permitted to book 5 hours of appointments per semester (any combination of 30-minute and 60-minute appointments). Students are restricted to one hour of tutoring per day.
7. Who are McGill Writing Centre tutors?
Most of our dedicated and hardworking McGill Writing Centre tutors are Master's and PhD students in a variety of disciplines at McGill with a strong background in teaching and/or tutoring writing. Tutors who are not currently studying at McGill also have many years of experience in teaching academic and professional writing.
8. Where should I go if I require content help, or proofreading?
The McGill Writing Centre Tutorial Service is not a proofreading and editing service. Proofreading and content assistance is available through the Tutorial Service run by McGill Student Services at a rate of $15/hour. Their website is located at http://www.mcgill.ca/tutoring/request. In addition, the following McGill organizations also offer tutoring in various subject areas:
