Biography:

Professor Gyorkos has been a researcher in global health for over 30 years. She is known for her population-based epidemiological field research focusing on reducing the disease burden of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) diseases in children and women in resource-limited settings, and for her contributions to global health policy related to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) at the World Health Organization (WHO). She has studied the effectiveness of deworming programs in school-age children and pregnant women, investigated the effect of STH infections on cognition in preschool-age children, and confirmed absenteeism associated with STH in school-age children. She has contributed to WHO guidelines, manuals and other documents, in addition to global policies and strategies, with respect to NTDs and is an active member of several WHO initiatives working towards the control, elimination and eradication of NTDs over the next decade. In 2023, she completed her second mandate as Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Parasite Epidemiology and Control (CAN-88).
