January 24, 2025 | The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear a challenge against Quebec's controversial secularism law that prohibits certain public workers from wearing religious symbols while performing their duties. Professor Pearl Eliadis joined for an interview with the CBC to discuss the nature of the issues at stake, by the very fact that the court has agreed to hear the case.

March 18, 2024 | Pearl Eliadis recently contributed her expertise to an episode of "Arrest sur le droit," a podcast in partnership between the Supreme Court of Canada and the Quebec legal organization CAIJ. In Episode 4, Pearl discusses the SCC's ruling to the case of Ward v. Quebec (Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission), exploring its implications for freedom of expression.

February 27, 2024 | The Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School hosted a seminar with a focus on the evolution of hate and discriminatory speech. This seminar built upon the foundation laid by the Max Bell School's previous conference in 2022, "Humour, Hate, and Harm," which focused on rethinking dignity, equality, and freedom of expression.

On May 25, the Max Bell School of Public Policy was honoured to receive the Hon. David Lametti, Canada’s Minister of Justice and the Attorney-General of Canada. The Minister spoke to the entire cohort of students in Law, Human Rights and Public Policy, a core course in the MPP program. Minister Lametti discussed his role in cabinet and as Attorney-General, exploring the multiple connections between law and public policy.

November 12, 2022 | Quebec government and the groups opposing Bill 21 are challenging a court decision that largely upheld the controversial religious symbols law. Professor Pearl Eliadis commented on the hearing into the appeal that started this week. She states that the situation is complex with ten separate ongoing appeals, which each group asking for slightly different outcomes like the focus on english language minority rights.

New gun control legislation the federal government tabled Monday includes a national freeze on the purchase, sale, importation and transfer of handguns in Canada. The legislation comes after a number of mass shootings in the United States, including a recent shooting at an elementary school that killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas. (CBC News

Three young student lawyers yesterday got a $5,000 boost after top law firm Marshall, Diel & Myers split its annual scholarship award between them.

... Ms [Alexis] Haynes, who has graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University, also Canada, later graduated from Queen Mary, University of London with a law degree and will now read for her legal practice certificate and Master’s degree in law at the University of Law in London.
