Infectious diseases and respiratory infections in particular are a leading cause of global mortality. As such, there is an urgent need for rapid, large-scale diagnostic tools that can detect these diseases early, something which doesn’t currently exist. To address these problems, McGill University Professor of Bioengineering Sara Mahshid’s lab has developed an all-in-one detection platform (QolorEX) that can deliver test results in just 13 minutes.
New funding of $5.1 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), announced today by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, will help researchers Marcel Behr, MD, PhD, and Silvia Vidal, PhD, ensure that Canada is better prepared for the next pandemic. This funding is part of the more than $127 million investment being made through the CFI to support upgrades to eight biocontainment facilities across the country as part of its new Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund (BRIF) program.

The Department of Pediatric is pleased to announce that Dr. Earl Rubin, Associate Professor, has been appointed Division Director of Infectious Diseases, starting May 1, 2018.
Dr. Rubin is well known to our Departmental and hospital community. He completed training and became certified in three disciplines at McGill (pediatrics, infectious diseases and microbiology) and has spent his entire academic career here. Dr. Rubin is a widely recognized, highly valued, and well respected clinician and educator.
