Two tardy treys topple Redmen in college hoops

MONTREAL - Decee Krah, a senior guard from Hamilton, Ont., scored a game-high 23 points, including a pair of three-pointers in the final 13 seconds as visiting Concordia rallied to defeat McGill 86-83 in men's basketball before 585 fans at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

In a game that featured a season-high 16 lead changes, Concordia held a 29-22 advantage after the opening stanza, which was reduced to 44-43 at halftime and 65-60 after three quarters. McGill rallied in the final period and actually led 78-72 with 95 seconds remaining, setting the stage for the Stingers to produce a last-minute miracle and split the season series between the cross-town rivals. All four meetings were decided by four points or less and McGill outscored the Stingers by a combined total of 288-287.

Krah, who shot 8-for-16 from the field, including a 5-for-7 effort from the three-point arc, was one of five Stingers to reach double figures in scoring. Three of them registered a "double-double", including Evens Laroche (16 pts, 11 rbs), James Clark (13 pts, 11 rbs) and Kyle Desmarais (10 pts, 11 rbs).

Four Redmen also reached double figures, including point-guard Olivier Bouchard (22 pts) and Michael White (15), plus Tristan Renaud-Tremblay and Karim Sy-Morissette, with 10 apiece.

Bouchard, a 5-foot-6 point-guard from Montreal, went 7-for-13 from the floor, 3-for-5 from three-point range and made five of six from the free-throw line. He was also credited with three assists and an identical number of steals.

The Redmen shot 37.3 per cent from the field, 27.3 from three-point territory (6/22) and 79.4 from the line, compared to Concordia, which shot 41.2, 47.4 and 60.0, respectively. The Stingers, who also had a huge 52-34 advantage in rebounds, went to the line 13 more times than McGill and came away with a 21-for-35 performance.

The result, combined with Bishop's stunning 82-75 upset of Laval, gave Concordia sole possession of first-place with an 11-4 record and one game remaining before playoffs. The Stingers have a two-point bulge over Laval (10-5). McGill, which dropped four points back at 9-6, will finish third in the five-team conference for the second straight season. The nine victories are the most by a Redmen team since 2001-02, when they posted a 12-3 record.

McGill will conclude the QUBL campaign on Feb. 25, when they play host to fourth-place UQAM (5-9) on "Seniors Night", where graduating veterans Michael White and Kyle Bernard, both Montrealers, will be suiting up for their last regular-season contest.

Concordia, which finished in the basement last year, can claim a rare last-to-first turnaround with a win over cellar-dwelling Bishop's (2-13) on Feb. 26.
