MONTREAL - Maxime Langelier-Parent, a 24-year-old forward with the McGill University men's hockey team, has signed a one-year standard player's contract, plus a club option year for 2013-14, with the American Hockey League's Norfolk Admirals, the top farm team of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound centre from Léry, Que., scored 12 goals - half of them shorthanded - and 18 points in 28 regular season games for the Redmen, who captured their first-ever CIS national championship on March 25. In 45 games overall, the speedy senior had a 16-16-32 record with 97 penalty minutes, two power-play goals, a school record six shorthanded markers, four game-winners and a hat-trick.

Langelier-Parent, an alternate captain who is expected to graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in economics, owns a lifetime mark of 47-70-117 and 316 PIMs in 174 games overall during his four seasons with McGill. He has also tallied a school record 11 shorthanded goals and 10 winning markers.

"It's great news for our program and I'm very happy for Max as he is a hard-worker who has improved steadily over his career," said Kelly Nobes, head coach of the Redmen. "He is one of the top skaters in CIS hockey and I expect him to have a solid pro career."

Before playing for the Redmen, he toiled for three teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, with Victoriaville, St. John's and Gatineau, posting a 5-6-11 record in 53 games between 2004 and 2006. He then played for College Français, the Longueuil-based club in the Quebec Jr. AAA league where he scored 24 goals and 59 points in 50 games.

Langelier-Parent, who didn't miss a game this season despite being hampered by a groin injury during the 2012 playoffs, is expected to report to Norfolk  after writing his final exams later this month. The Admirals are currently on a 22-game winning streak, the longest in AHL history.

He will become the 10th player produced by McGill to skate in the AHL, joining a list that includes David Urquhart, now playing in Europe after three seasons in the AHL (2008-11), Jean-Michel Daoust (2007-11), Daniel Jacob (2004-05), Greg Davis (2001-03), Mathieu Darche (2000-10), Pierre Gendron (1997-98), Jim Webster (1980-81), Danny Porteous (1947-50) and Johnny Peirson (1946-48). If Langelier-Parent gets called up to the big leagues, he would also become the 10th player out of McGill and the 160th Canadian university player to to skate in the NHL.
