NHL players poised to participate at Redmen Summer Hockey tourney, Saturday

The impending National Hockey League lockout has been a boon to the fourth annual Redmen Summer 4-on-4 Hockey Tournament. A dozen players affiliated with NHL teams have signed up to take part in the one-day event on Saturday (Aug. 25) at McConnell Arena on the campus of McGill University.

Hockey Redmen receive CIS national championship rings

The McGill University men's hockey team, which captured their first-ever CIS national title in March, finally received their much-awaited championship rings in a ceremony held at McConnell Arena's Alumni Lounge, Tuesday.

Johnny Peirson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 21, 1925. After playing one season of hockey for the McGill University Redmen in 1945-46, he made the jump to the American Hockey League and a short time later, moved up the ladder to the NHL, where he had an extended playing career - 11 seasons - with the Boston Bruins from 1946 to 1958.

McGill grad Kompon appointed to coaching staff of NHL's Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks appointed Jamie Kompon as an assistant coach, Tuesday. The 45-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., is a McGill University graduate, who previously served as captain of the McGill Redmen and later coached the team.

McGill grad garners gold as Canada doubles USA to win world inline hockey championship

The Canadian women's senior inline hockey team had a McGill flavour when it defeated the United States 4-2 on Saturday, to claim gold at the 11th annual world championship of the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports, a nine-team tournament in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

2012 HALL OF FAME PROFILE: Frank McGill

The late Air Vice-Marshall Frank McGill is among five new additions announced recently for induction to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame. Once referred to by The Canadian Press as "a hazel-eyed superman", McGill was also inducted to Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

Vossen becomes fourth member of CIS champs to sign pro pact

Evan Vossen, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the McGill University men's hockey team their first-ever CIS national championship last March, has signed a contract to play for the Stockton Thunder of the East Coast Hockey League. Stockton shares an NHL affiliation with both the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks.

Kings Kompon becomes 14th McGill hockey grad to win Stanley Cup

When Los Angeles defeated New Jersey 6-1 on Monday to win the Stanley Cup, Kings assistant coach Jamie Kompon became the 14th former McGill University hockey player to capture the Cup and only the fourth to do so as a coach. Kompon follows in the coaching footsteps of other McGill hockey greats Mike Babcock and the legendary Patrick brothers, Frank and Lester.
