Darkness suspends third round of Canadian collegiate golf championship

Published: 2 June 2010

Fredericton, N.B. (Golf Canada) - McGill's Mélissa Coré of Beaconsfield, Que., sits 12th overall with a 20 over par score of 236 after Wednesday's third round at the 2010 Canadian collegiate championship. Whle the women's round was completed, the men were not as lucky and their play was suspended due to darkness.

Of the men, 80 players finished their third round and 23 players have yet to complete their round. Play at Kingswood Park will resume at 7:00 a.m. (ADT), Thursday morning. The cut for the men's final will occur right at the conclusion of the third round, followed immediately by the final round.

The women completed their third round and the six-time defending champions, the University of British Columbia, are in the lead at 901. The University of Victoria is in second spot with a team total of 926. Rounding out the top three teams is the University of Montreal with a score of 992.

In the women's individual competition, the University of British Columbia's Kylie Barros (73, 74, 76, - 223) is tied for first place with University of Victoria's Anne Balser (75, 74, 74, -223). University of British Columbia's Jocelyn Alford is in third place (75-77-74-226).

"The greens are pretty consistent which we all found really helpful," said Barros. "The course played really great and we avoided the bad weather which was an added bonus for us, they (the greens) rolled evenly and I was able to make some good putts."

As a representative of the University of British Columbia, Barros said the women are "used to the rain." In terms of their game plan for the final round they don't want to get too far ahead of themselves. "We are just going to stick with what we've been doing by focusing on the process, taking it one hole at a time. There are some strong teams out there - hopefully we can maintain our lead."

With only partial scoring in for day three, the men's team division and individual competition are not complete. However, as darkness fell over Kingswood Park, Université Laval was in the lead, 10 strokes ahead of the first-round leader, the University of British Columbia, and Humber College. In the men's individual competition, University of Montreal's Philippe André Bannon is in first place, with a score of 138 for two rounds.

"The weather was a lot better this afternoon and the greens dried up a bit. The game plan is different, the ball will roll more, similar to Monday," said Bannon. "The focus is the same though. We have a plan with the team and hope to all play well - as well as the first round. For me, I will try to probably do the same [game plan], sometimes you make putts or sometimes not."

The following are the complete third round scores for the women's team and individual competitions at the 2010 Canadian University/College Championship.  The cut tomorrow will result in the top 10 teams in the men's division and the top five teams in the women's division battling it out for the national title.  Individuals within 15 strokes of the lead will also tee off tomorrow for the final round.

Starting times, post-round results and a full field list for the 2010 Canadian University/College Championship are available at www.rcga.org/championships.

In all, 156 male and female golfers from post-secondary institutes across Canada travelled to Fredericton, N.B., to compete for both team and individual titles at this year's event.  The field is comprised of 20 men's and 10 women's teams as well as six individuals.

The team championship involves five-player teams competing over 72 holes with the top four individual scores counting towards the team total. After 54 holes, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men's and top five women's teams, as well as individuals within 15 strokes of the lead. Individual champions will also be crowned after 72 holes.

As part of Golf Canada's Pathway to Champions, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes of play will earn an exemption into the 2010 Canadian Men's Amateur Championship and the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship respectively.
