Bielby and Porfilio named McGill - Ye Olde Orchard athletes of the week

MONTREAL -- Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., and Jessica Porfilio of Longueuil, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 9, 2011.

 

Bielby, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound sprinter and middle-distance specialist with the Redmen swim team, was named male athlete of the meet at the first Coupe de Quebec competition of the season, held at the Université de Montreal last Friday. The 22-year-old electrical engineering senior who is on the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, won three gold medals and one silver, while guiding the Redmen to place second of four teams overall. Bielby's winning times were 4:30.04 in the 400-metre individual medley, 56.26 in the 100m butterfly and swam the anchor leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay, which was clocked in 3:28.05. He also helped the 4x100 medley relay squad finish second. Bielby enrolled at McGill in 2008 after graduating from John Abbott College.

 

Porfilio, a 5-foot-2 distance runner on the Martlets cross-country team, finished second of 62 entries, helping McGill win the seven-team Laval Rouge et Or invitational meet on the Plains of Abraham, Saturday. A product of Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que., the 19-year-old freshman in nursing completed the four-kilometre course in 14 minutes, 24 seconds. She has been McGill's top scorer in all three races this season.

 

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
