Vadasz Doctoral Fellowships (2007-19)
The Vadasz Doctoral Fellowships program no longer exists. Thanks to a generous donation by the Vadasz Family Foundation in 2019, the Vadasz Scholars Program was established in its place, enhancing and building on the previous program. Here are names and fields of research of past Vadasz Doctoral Fellowship recipients.

Larissa Jorge
PhD Chemical Engineering, 2018
In May 2013 Chemical Engineering PhD Candidate Larissa Jorge joined the research group of professors Sylvain Coulombe and Pierre-Luc Girard-Lauriault, in the Department of Chemical Engineering, with a research project on the development and characterization of surface engineering techniques of nanomaterials. Being a Vadasz fellow gave her the freedom to explore and broaden her scientific horizon, gaining a better perspective on how much time it takes to achieve something “meaningful” that is seen by the larger public. She is deeply grateful to the Vadasz Family Foundation that understands the slow pace of progress and believes in researchers such as herself. Larissa is now Laboratory Supervisor at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.

Jonathan Buset
PhD Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2015
Jonathan Buset was awarded a Vadasz Fellowship in 2008. The award’s financial support persuaded him to stay at McGill and work in the world class laboratory facilities of the Photonics Systems Group. Under the supervision of Professor David Plant, Jonathan’s project involved developing the next-generation of high-speed fiber optic networks that power the Internet, in particular a new fiber-to-the-home architecture based on concepts from wireless and long-haul transport networks. After graduating he joined Infinera Corp. in Sunnyvale, California as a Senior Optical Engineer, contributing to the research and development efforts to build Infinera’s next-generation of Intelligent Transport Networks.

Jennifer Frattolin
PhD Mechanical Engineering, 2018
Jennifer Frattolin received a Vadasz Doctoral Fellowship in Engineering in May 2014, to work under the supervision of Professor Rosaire Mongrain. Her research lies primarily in the study of cardiovascular disease, with respect to the design and development of cardiovascular devices, such as stents, prosthetic heart valves, and total artificial hearts. She works to improve the design and implementation of such devices, resulting in beneficial impact on patient health and prognosis, conducting research, with the support of the Vadasz Doctoral Fellowship, to assist in the development of a novel biodegradable metallic stent. Jennifer is currently Postdoctoral Researcher at Imperial College London.

William Lepry
PhD Materials Engineering, 2017
William Lepry received the Vadasz Fellowship in Engineering in 2012, studying under the supervision of Professor Showan Nazhat. His research focuses on biomedical glasses that can be used to repair bone and other mineralized tissues in the body. His goal is to make materials that can directly improve the lives of others, and he recognizes how the Vadasz fellowship has helped increase his research output and opportunities. William Lepry’s work has been supported by Canada NSERC and has won the Faculty of Engineering’s 2016-2017 William and Rhea Seath Awards Competition. He is now a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at McGill.
