Exploring user attitudes to potential transformations on Chemin Upper-Lachine
CONSENT FORM
This online questionnaire is part of a study now being conducted by Professor Nik Luka of the Schools of Architecture and Urban Planning at McGill University. It is part of a larger project coordinated by the Montréal Urban Ecology Centre, working in partnership with the MOBILIGO Centre de gestion des déplacements and the Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, to develop a Plan du Quartier vert, actif et en santé (QVAS) de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Sud-Est which will be launched to the public in November 2011.
McGill University has teamed up with the Montréal Urban Ecology Centre on this study, which has two main objectives:
- To determine the degree of support among users of chemin Upper-Lachine (residents, visitors, and merchants) vis-à-vis design propositions developed through the QVAS project ;
- To explore the ways in which respondents are able to understand planning and design propositions through the use of different forms of representation.
This study has received partial funding from the Making Megaprojects Work for Communities Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) coordinated by Professor Lisa Bornstein of the School of Urban Planning. The results of this study will be shared through academic papers, conference presentations, community meetings, and project reports. The results will not be used for any kind of market research or for-profit activity. The data generated will be analysed and discussed as part of the QVAS and CURA projects now underway.
Please note that participation in this study is limited to those 18 years of age or older. The study has been reviewed and received clearance from a research ethics review committee at McGill University. All information gathered by this questionnaire will be held in strictest confidence in keeping with McGill University guidelines for the ethical conduct of research involving human subjects. No information will be released or traceable to individual respondents. Nothing that you say will be associated with your name in any report or presentation which may arise from the study; instead, your responses will be identified only with a code number when the results are transcribed and encoded by the research team. Only the Study Director, Professor Nik Luka, and his Research Assistants will have access to the original data collected during the study, all of which will be stored on password-protected computers and in locked cabinets at McGill University.
As a participant, you may not benefit directly from the study, but the information generated will help both researchers and decision-makers to aid local communities in the development of practical design strategies for making part of Sherbrooke Street West more ‘user-friendly’ (in terms of public space, affordances for active transportation, etc.). A summary of the findings will be made available to you upon request, and if you wish, you can receive a copy of the project report(s) in full.
You are under no obligation to agree to participate. If you do agree, the questionnaire will take about 10 minutes to complete with questions on the following topics:
- Your use of chemin Upper-Lachine between Boulevard Décarie and Rue Saint-Jacques;
- Your attitudes toward options for reorganising the street to favour active transportation (walking and cycling);
- Some aspects of your personal life, such as your residential history and future plans, your age, marital status, and modes of transportation you use for everyday activities.
By proceeding, you are acknowledging that you have agreed to participate in this study, which explores user perceptions of various proposed design interventions for Chemin Upper-Lachine. The study is now being done by a research team under the supervision of Professor Nik Luka of the Schools of Architecture and Urban Planning at McGill University. You also acknowledge that you agree of your own free will to complete a questionnaire in which you will be asked to respond to questions concerning your perceptions, attitudes, and feelings towards possible transformations to Chemin Upper-Lachine. You furthermore acknowledge that you may refuse to answer any questions, and that you may cease to take part in the questionnaire at any time.
