Parking fees resuming on campus

With an increasing number of units now welcoming staff and students back to our campuses for the Fall semester, Parking Services has resumed charging fees effective Sunday, September 27, as was announced by email earlier. Users have the option to purchase daily parking passes or permits. Until further notice, parking fees will be at 50% of the usual rates, for McGill staff, faculty and students.

DOWNTOWN CAMPUS

Employees

Employees who had parking permits when the campus shutdown

Please note that priority will be given to employees who had parking permits when the campus shutdown (employees who had suspended their permits prior to the campus shutdown will be examined on a case-by-case basis). However, they must advise they want to purchase a permit or day passes before 5pm, September 11, 2020, otherwise they forfeit their priority. Suspension of parking permits past December 31, 2020 will result in the loss of location priority (please indicate COVID-19 as the reason for suspension). However, parking permits or day passes will be issued for locations that have not yet reached capacity.

Day passes

Day passes can be pre-purchased at the rate of $10.00 per pass OR $42.50 for a pack of 5 passes. These passes have scratch boxes for the month, day, and year as well as a location indicated. A pass is valid for one day’s use (the correct date must be scratched) and should be destroyed after usage. It is also valid for parking in a specific location only, with alternate location(s) provided in the event that a parking area reaches capacity. Every effort will be made to provide employees with their first choice of location, however this will be based on how many permits have been allocated to the location, whether or not an employee has a mobility issue that requires proximity parking, and whether or not the employee had a parking permit when the campus shutdown.

A maximum of 30 day passes can be purchased at one time.

Please view the section on Locations and rates.

A pre-purchased day pass is not required for parking at the McGill Sports Complex/Molson Stadium and Upper Residences lots (accessed just north of 3801 University (The Neuro)), where there is a parking attendant who can accept payment and issue a daily ticket to be displayed on the dashboard. To obtain the reduced daily rate of $10.00, you must show a valid McGill ID card to the parking attendant at the booth by the entrance (between 3801 University and 3851 University). Payment can be made to the agent using cash, debit or credit card. Please note the agent cannot track multiple entries so users who would like to pay $42.50 for a pack of 5 passes must arrange to purchase these from the Parking and Transportation Services office.

The pay and display machines in the FDA (Engineering) Courtyard and the Drummond lot will continue to charge the full rates (ex. $20.00 daily maximum). For users wishing to park in these locations at the reduced rate, day passes must be purchased in advance.

The process to purchase day passes is detailed in the How to purchase a parking permit or prepaid day passes section.

Weekly or monthly permits

Parking permits can be purchased by calendar month or by week. The fee will depend on the location allocated. Every effort will be made to provide employees with their first choice, however the allocation of permits will be based on availability at the time the permit is needed, whether or not an employee has a mobility issue that requires proximity parking, and whether or not the employee had a parking permit prior to the campus shutdown.

Users who wish to purchase a parking permit for a minimum of 4 months and who are eligible for a payroll deduction (available only to permanent staff members) may pay for parking at the annual (payroll deduction) rate.

The process to purchase weekly or monthly permits is detailed in the How to purchase a parking permit or prepaid day passes section.

Employees with mobility issues

Employees who have a government-issued permit for parking in spaces designated for persons with disabilities should submit a photo or scan of the registration paper that accompanies their government-issued permit when applying for a parking permit or day passes.

Employees who do not have a government-issued permit for parking in spaces designated for persons with disabilities but who have a medical reason requiring proximity parking will need to apply for a proximity parking authorization through Human Resources (HR). For more information, please visit the Human Resources Benefits website. It is strongly recommended that this is done as soon as possible as a proximity parking permit will not be issued unless HR approves the request and advises the Parking Office.
