Seminar: Linking Undergraduate Teaching and Research at McGill

Bruce M. Shore, Professor of Educational Psychology, and two of his graduate students, Liv Hua and Tanya Chichekian, will share the results of their research on how professors at McGill perceive connections between teaching and research. Professor Shore will begin with a historical look at the assumption the University has made that there is a special connection between the two. He will summarize the results of a baseline study done in the 1980s which described how two professors in each of 25 departments regarded the connection, then take a look at a follow-up study which included almost every professor in English and Chemistry. Ms. Hua and Ms Chichekian will present the preliminary results of a recent set of interviews with almost every Chemistry professor at McGill on the impact of research on teaching at the undergraduate level, and the possibilities for promoting a culture of inquiry in which undergraduates share in the adventure of scientific discovery.

Presenter Bios

Prof. Bruce M. Shore is Professor of Educational Psychology at McGill University. Born in Montreal, he received his BSc in 1965, a teaching diploma in 1966, and an MA in Education in 1967, all from McGill University. After two years as secondary school mathematics teacher, he obtained his PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Calgary in 1971. He was appointed to what is now the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology in 1970 and since then has served as its Chair for nine years. He is a licensed psychologist in Quebec, was President of the McGill Association of University Teachers in 2000-2001 and served as McGill¹s Dean of Students from 2001 to 2006. From 1970 to 1991 he was also a member of what is now the University’s Teaching and Learning Services. He is currently the Associate Director (McGill) of the multi-campus Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance. His research and graduate supervision address the cognitive abilities of exceptionally able students from primary to tertiary levels, and the special qualities of inquiry-driven teaching and learning as an optimal learning environment for all students, including the gifted.

Professor Shore received three McGill teaching awards in 2009--the Faculty of Education Award for Excellence in Teaching, The David Thomson Award for Graduate Teaching and Supervision, and the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching--and in 2010 he was elected as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association.

Liv Hua is a PhD student in Educational Psychology (Learning Sciences stream) in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She has a BA in Psychology from the University of Waterloo and an MA in Educational Psychology from McGill University. Her research and career interests are in inquiry-based learning, inclusive education, and faculty development, all with a special emphasis within higher education.

Tanya Chichekian is an MA student in Educational Psychology (Learning Sciences stream) in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University. She received her BEd in 1999 from McGill University. She worked 3 years as a secondary school mathematics teacher, and most recently 8 years as an Academic Advisor at Dawson College, the last 2 as Coordinator of the unit. Her research focuses on inquiry-based teaching and learning, with a particular interest in the International Baccalaureate programs.
