Sustainability Assessment and LCA Workshop

This workshop covered the basic principles, applications and tools associated with some of the most popular methods for assessing the sustainability of human activities. We then focused on the theoretical framework for modeling the life cycle of a selected system. Using this framework as the basis, we learned about the approaches of carbon and water footprinting, energy analysis, and life cycle assessment. Examples were used to demonstrate the characteristics of each approach. Hands-on experience in these methods were available with the help of free software such as OpenLCA, EIO-LCA and EcoLCA. We finished by focusing on the pros and cons of current methods and directions and opportunities for further research.

Dr. Bhavik Bakshi

Bhavik Bakshi is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Ohio State University (OSU). He also holds appointments in Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering at OSU and as a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai, India. His research involves developing methods and applications for assessing and designing sustainable systems that respect nature's limits and reduce the chance of unintended harm. He received his chemical engineering degrees from the University of Bombay and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with a minor in technology and environmental policy from MIT and Harvard.
