Research

Focus

My laboratory is interested in the molecular microbiology of biofilms and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Biofilms are multicellular bacterial communities that are exceptionally tolerant to antibiotics, biocides and various environmental stresses. In addition to being ubiquitous in the natural environment, biofilms also cause numerous human infections such as endocarditis and catheter-associated infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms cause debilitating and often fatal chronic airway infections in patients with cystic fibrosis.
Our work is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation, detachment, and antibiotic tolerance. This will provide insights into the pathogenesis of infection and potential new therapeutic targets against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms.
