About the Partnership Development Grant
In 2016, Dr. Laurie Gottlieb was awarded a Healthy and Productive Work Partnership Development Grant (PDG) jointly funded by CIHR and SSHRC for the project Transforming Nurses’ Work-Life Environments Through Training Clinical Leaders and Managers in Strengths-Based Nursing Using Innovative Forms of Story-Sharing. Partner institutions on the partnership development grant were McGill University, Concordia University, The Hospital for Sick Children, and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.
With the PDG, the partners developed a Strengths-Based Leadership and Management (SB-L/M) training program which integrated the philosophy, principles, and pragmatics of SB-L/M, SBNH, and best practices of leadership and management. This training program was piloted in 2018.
The Pilot Training Program
The program was designed to meet the needs of emerging leaders in health care who must combine a deep understanding of how best to create compassionate, patient and family-centered care environments that promote healing for patients with complex needs. The training program integrated the pragmatics and business acumen that leads to efficient systems, highly effective and resilient teams, and optimized system performance – leading ultimately to the best outcomes for patients. Innovative forms of storytelling were designed to facilitate reflection within the clinical context that these leaders work; influencing the environment, patient care decisions and collaborative relationships.
Mentorship was an essential element to engage learners in facilitating uptake. (See the list of mentors who participated in the pilot training program here).
At the completion of the program all learners received a certificate of completion from the International Institute of Strengths-Based Nursing and Health Care and Continuing Education Credits were awarded from the Ingram School of Nursing, McGill University. This first iteration of the program engaged 16 learners from human resources, business, and nursing leadership working at The Hospital for Sick Children and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto.
This project has currently entered its second phase, through the awarding of a CIHR and SSHRC funded Partnership Grant. Read more about the Partnership Grant's activities here.
