Dr Barbeau examines the neurophysiological and neuropharmacological mechanisms underlying locomotion in spastic paretic subjects suffering from spinal cord injuries. He has ongoing projects in a human gait laboratory which is designed to assess the walking as well as the reflex pattern in normal subjects and spinal cord injured patients in response to various interventions (e.g. degree of weight bearing, external perturba-tions) and to pharmacological agents. He carries out clinical studies on locomotor training and pharmaco-logi-cal interven-tion in human gait laboratories at the Montreal Rehabilitation Institute and the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital. He also performs animal research at the Centre de recherché en sciences neurologiques at University of Montreal.
