DESCRIPTION:Dr. Luna Vives is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre
for Research on Children and Families\, McGill University. Her work focus
es on how uneven power relationships between mainstream and racialized pop
ulations are perpetuated through differential access to public services. D
 r. Vives’ areas of expertise include inter-national migration\, human righ
ts\, public policy and knowledge trans-lation and transfer. Besides her re
search\, Dr. Vives has experience teaching college and university-level co
urses\, and has been involved in a number of grassroots community developm
ent initiatives in Canada and abroad.\n\nDr. Vives will give an example le
cture tailored to a typical BSW class (SWRK 221 - Public Social Service in
Canada with a focus on international migration). She will be speaking abo
ut “Immigration Policy as a Framework for Social Work Practice”.\n	Internat
ional migration is the movement of people across national borders for the
purpose of resettlement. Immigration policy regu-lates this movement\, and
at the same time grants and limits access to rights and public services f
or non-nationals. In this lecture\, Dr. Vives will explore the role of imm
igration policy as a tool that governments use to respond to the challenge
s posed by an aging population\; present the main categories of migration
in Canada\; and discuss their implications for Social Work practice. By th
e end of the class\, students will have the tools to engage critically wit
 h this area of public policy.\n\nDate: Thu\, Oct 27 \, 2016\n\nTime: 9:30
 - 10:30 am\n\nLocation:\n	School of Social Work\n	McGill University\n	3506 Un
