Run for Outreach 2017

The Pitch

We believe that everyone deserves a bright smile and a bright future. Help raise funds to bolster McGill Faculty of Dentistry's Service to the Community Program by supporting the Faculty’s Run for Outreach 2017.

The Highlights

  • Spread awareness of the McGill Service to the Community Program within the Montreal community through the Run for Outreach 2017
  • Highlight the goals of the Service to the Community Program, including delivering no-cost dental care to underserved people in Montreal
  • Support the Faculty of Dentistry’s commitment to providing dentistry students with hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings

The Story

Achieving proper oral hygiene is not feasible for everyone. It may be difficult, intimidating or even impossible due to financial hardship, lack of insurance and physical or psychological disabilities. When oral health is neglected or left untreated, it often leads to serious health problems.

These considerations are the reason behind the McGill Faculty of Dentistry’s one-of-a-kind Service to the Community Program, which has been providing free dental care to patients in need for more than 17 years. Staffed by McGill dental students, dentists and many volunteers, the Program provides free dental care to individuals within the greater Montreal region via its Mobile Clinic, the Jim Lund Dental Clinic, the Montreal Children’s Hospital Dental Clinic, and the Summer Clinic. It also offers services at 50% of regular costs in the Faculty’s main Undergraduate Teaching Clinic. The Service to the Community Program not only allows patients to receive much-needed treatment but is also a great learning opportunity for students.

The impact so far of the Service to the Community Program:

  • Over 5,208 patients have received more than 31,463 procedures;
  • A total of $933,735 worth of free care has been provided and $2,346,224 worth of dental care has been provided at half-cost
  • The Faculty partners with approximately 25 community organizations in Montreal to deliver the Program’s services

About The Run:

Service to the Community is a proud tradition at McGill’s Faculty of Dentistry, and it depends on contributions and fundraising in order to be able to continue its work. This is the raison d’être for The Run for Outreach event.

The Run, taking place on Saturday, September 30th at 10:00AM, gathers students, faculty members, friends, family and the community to participate in a 5km walk/5km run/10km run around Mount Royal to raise money and awareness for this great program! Our runners are also competing with each other to raise the most funds. You can help them by mentioning their names on the comment wall so that we can recognize the person who raised the most money!
