Professor Richard George Donovan (or “Dono”, as he was known affectionately to students) passed away suddenly on August 3, 2019. Professor Donovan made a lasting impact on all Desautels students, staff and faculty.
Professor Donovan began teaching at Desautels in 1997, first as a Faculty Lecturer and most recently as a Senior Faculty Lecturer. He served in many other administrative roles in our Faculty, including as Associate Dean of the BCom program from 2001-2004 and Director of the BCom program from 2013-2014. Over the span of his career, he was perhaps best known for his commitment to case training. A champion of experiential learning, Professor Donovan generously contributed his time and expertise as a coach to numerous case teams. For over two decades, he mentored countless students to compete on local and international stages, allowing them to put their management theory into practice. Travelling with students across continents, he was instrumental in putting McGill on the map for its talented Management students. Professor Donovan will be remembered for his collaborative, friendly demeanor, his commitment to his work, and his genuine care for his students.
Thanks to overwhelming support so far, we are pleased to announce that we now have enough funds for the new Richard G. Donovan Prize in Case Excellence. This direct-funded prize will recognize graduating students who have excelled in case competition work and who have contributed to case at Desautels.
Our work is far from over!
In order to continue honoring Professor Donovan’s memory, we need your support to bring this project to the next level. Our goal: an endowed prize that will benefit Desautels case students in perpetuity. We hope we can count on your support to ensure that Professor Donovan’s memory lives on at Desautels for years to come.
