the story

As was the case for university sports programs across Canada, this past year was challenging for MURFC. With the looming possibility last May that the 2020 fall season would be cancelled, the rugby club undertook planning for a fall semester without training or competition. Even so, we knew that we would not stand idly by in the face of this crisis in our city and province, and that we would need to step up and make a positive difference for others.

The MURFC has a rich heritage dating back to the founding of the club and McGill’s first varsity rugby team in 1872, and the history-making games with Harvard University just two years later in May 1874. Since 2000, McGill’s rugby team has played in 17 of 20 provincial finals winning 11 titles, and the club has continued its long history of charity, philanthropy and community service.

In fall 2020, we organized two community campaigns in which we raised over $5,000 for the COVID-19 Emergency Fund at the CHU Sainte-Justine, a children’s hospital in Montreal. In addition, we raised $7,000 for the Movember Foundation in support of men’s mental and physical health.

In 2021, we are respectfully asking once again for your support to help continue our tradition of hard work and success on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Pending the public health situation in 2021, we hope to achieve excellence by improving our training capabilities, excelling in our home RSEQ Conference, AND participating in several competitive non-RSEQ fixtures in Canada and the USA

We need you as our partners so we can jointly continue to build this treasured program and look ahead to our 150th anniversary in 2022!
