McGill Dental Mission to Jamaica

The Pitch
Help our team of 12 dental students and 3 clinical instructors, in association with Great Shapes! Inc. 1000 Smiles project, to provide free, essential dental care – such as fillings and extractions – to underserved populations in Jamaica.

The Highlights
With your help, we will be able to:

  • Provide free dental care to over 250 local Jamaicans.
  • Educate locals on the importance of oral hygiene and its connection to overall health.
  • Sharpen our skills as dental practitioners, work to improve our empathy, interact with patients and practical knowledge.

The Story
From September 22 to October 1, 2018, a group of 12 students and 3 clinical instructors from the McGill Faculty of Dentistry will head to White House, Jamaica, to provide free, essential dental care to underserved populations in a community clinic setting. Our team aims to provide these important services, which include procedures such as fillings and extractions, to more than 250 patients. We will be working in association with Great Shape! Inc. 1000 Smiles project as well as the Jamaican Ministry of Health.

This project is extremely important: in rural Jamaica, there is only one dentist for every 100,000 people. Untreated dental issues can lead to infections, disease or unemployment. Each year, over 40,000 patients benefit from the work of volunteer students and staff working with Great Shape! Inc.’s 1000 Smiles project. McGill joined this mission last year with great success, and we look forward to building on the previous team’s accomplishments.

All funds raised will be used to help the volunteers with the program fees and transportation costs and will also be put toward both reusable and disposable dental equipment needed to provide care. Without these supplies we may be unable to see all of the patients that we plan to treat, and we may also be limited in the treatment we can provide.

Thank you in advance for helping to further the tradition of outstanding community service provided by the Faculty of Dentistry!
