Conquer HPV and Cervical Cancer

The Pitch

Help us offer awareness, free screening and free vaccinations to prevent cervical cancer and other HPV-associated diseases to underprivileged populations in Montreal!

The Highlights

With your contribution, we will be able to:

  • Raise funds to subsidize vaccines that protect against HPV and cervical cancer for underprivileged populations in Montreal
  • Promote sexual health, HPV, and cervical cancer awareness and screening within the community
  • Encourage research aimed at finding a cure for HPV

The Story

Did you know that the human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in Canada and worldwide? Different strains of HPV can lead to various health outcomes; among women, the virus can cause cervical cancer.

As the MSS Obstetrics and Gynecology Interest Group (MOGIG) at McGill, we are a group of medical students with a vested interest in women's health, who feel strongly about educating and protecting women when it comes to their reproductive wellbeing. Cervical cancer affects 1,500 women in Canada every year, and many of these cases could be prevented if women with HPV were promptly diagnosed and treated. Although there is no cure for HPV, regular screening can allow for its early detection and the best possible prevention of cervical cancer. In fact, vaccination against HPV can even prevent cervical cancer.

Unfortunately, vaccination is costly, and lack of awareness prevents regular screening. Research for a cure and funding of HPV vaccines and Pap tests for underprivileged populations are therefore causes that are close to our hearts at MOGIG, and we hope yours too!

Your support will be used directly to offer free screening tests and HPV vaccines to underprivileged populations, and to promote research in the field of HPV and cervical cancer. It will also contribute to an important fundraiser event that we will be hosting in November 2018, during Cervical Cancer Awareness Week, which promotes the same goals.

Any amount of help is greatly appreciated!
