DESCRIPTION: \n\nMcGill School of Communication Sciences and Disorders will
be hosting a 2-day course by Prof. Joan Arvedson (PhD\, CCC-SLP\, ASHA Fe
llow). This course will focus on how to problem solve complex swallowing a
nd feeding issues in infants and children via lecture\, videos\, and case
analyses. Targeted strategies will be discussed per evidence from sensorim
otor learning principles & neural plasticity. Assessment and intervention
goals optimize functional outcomes. Problem areas include: airway\; GI tra
ct (e.g.\, GERD and eosinophilic esophagitis)\; nutrition\; tube feeding &
weaning\; barriers to successful oral feeding & ways to overcome them\; p
icky eaters. This event is continuing education eligible.\n\nRegister Here
 \n\nRegistration Deadline: March 1st\, 2017\n\nREGISTRATION FEES INCLUDE:
 \n	Print course materials\, mid-morning and mid-afternoon drinks/snacks and
certificate of attendance. Lunch is on your own. \n\n \n\nAbout the Speak
 er:\n\nJoan Arvedson\n\nPhD\, CCC-SLP\, BCS-S\, ASHA Fellow\n\n
Joan C. Arvedson is internationally renowned for her pioneering research\,
instruction\, and clinical work in pediatric dysphagia. She is Program Co
ordinator of Feeding and Swallowing Services at Children’s Hospital of Wis
consin and Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, Medical Co
llege of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She received her BS\, MS\, and PhD from Un
iversity of Wisconsin-Madison. She was awarded Honors of the American Spee
ch-Language-Hearing Association in 2016\, which is ASHA’s highest distinct
ion. Her leadership\, clinical acumen\, and research united therapeutic an
d medical/surgical disciplines. She has three text books in publication\,
two self-study publications for continuing education through ASHA Professi
onal Development\, and has more than 35 peer-reviewed articles and 12 book
chapters. She has given more than 100 presentations at ASHA conventions\,
state conventions and national interdisciplinary conferences\, as well as
  international lectures/seminars in 24 countries.\n\n           While dire
ctor of speech-language pathology and audiology at Children’s Hospital of
Buffalo and as coordinator of feeding and swallowing services at Children’
s Hospital of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Dr. Arvedson takes a holistic\, compre
hensive approach to clinical and instrumental assessment and intervention
with infants and children.\n\nCourse Objectives:\n\n\n	\n Apply knowledge of
airway problems to make management decisions for infants and young childr
en with oropharyngeal dysphagia\n	\n	\n Identify and modify barriers to succe
 ssful oral feeding (e.g.\, nutrition\, GI tract\, allergy\, & neurologic c
onditions)\n	\n	\n Make assessment and management decisions for infants and c
hildren with complex underlying etiologies for dysphagia.\n	\n	\n Utilize str
ategies for facilitating oral feeding in high-risk infants and children.\n
\n	\n Demonstrate processes for advancing oral feeding in children who are t
ube feeders.\n	\n	\n Implement intervention with a range of sensory and behav
 ior based principles with picky eaters.\n	\n\n\nCourse Schedule:\n\nDay 1\n
