Science Communication Internship

Want to build your skills in writing for a non-specialist audience? The Faculty of Science is offering a one-semester internship in science communication, starting in Winter 2022. Under the supervision of the Faculty of Science Communications Officer, participants will receive guidance through workshops and individual feedback on their work. Successful completion will be recognized through the Co-Curricular Record program.

Who can participate?

Open to a limited number of current McGill undergraduate and graduate students. Preference given to students enrolled full time in the Faculty of Science.

What’s involved?

Over the course of the semester, participants in the Science Communication Internship will be expected to:

  • Write two pieces of no more than 1000 words each, pitched for publication through McGill channels and aimed at communicating scientific information to a non-specialist audience
  • Participate in two workshops on science communication where you will pitch at least one story idea on a science-related topic
  • Make story pitches that include the topic, the intended style of the piece (e.g. news report, feature, opinion piece, personal profile), and why readers might find the story interesting
  • Conduct background research and interviews necessary to complete the writing assignments

Time commitment

Estimated 23 hours over the semester (3 hours for scheduled workshops + estimated 20 hours research/writing work in participants’ own time).
