Project title: Organocatalytic Friedel-Crafts Reactions

Project description (50-100 words suggested): Our research group has identified a novel organocatalyst which forms α-substituted iminium ions which can be used for a variety of reactions including Cope rearrangements and Diels-Alder cycloadditions. We have preliminary evidence that the organocatalyst can induce Friedel-Crafts alkylations of heterocycles (indole, furan) with α-substituted enals. This project will explore this chemistry, including assessing substrate scope (electron rich and poor aromatics, β-substituted enals) and enantioselectivity (using chiral catalysts being developed in the group).

Prerequisite: Minimum 2 terms completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.3 or higher

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Laboratory performance: 50%; Final written report: 50%
