Project title: The effects of transcranial direct current magnetic stimulation on sensorimotor learning in speech

Project description (50-100 words suggested): Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can induce neuroplastic changes and modulate behavioral performance in a number of cognitive and motor behaviors. The mechanism of action on motor behavior appears to be through a decrease in GABA levels or a decrease in Glx levels in motor cortex with the specific action dependent on stimulation polarity. Anodal tDCS applied for 20 minutes across motor cortices facilitates motor cortical excitability and induces LTP-like effects. Here we will use anodal tDCS to induce left hemisphere motor cortex facilitation and examine short-term speech motor learning changes in response to alterations in auditory feedback and compare the experimental results to those from a sham control group.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Oral presentation of findings 20%; Evaluation of laboratory performance 30%; Final report 50%.
