Project title: Translational control in Drosophila germ line development

Project description (50-100 words suggested): Many organisms including humans express, in germline cells (precursors to eggs and sperm), specific RNA binding proteins and non-canonical forms of proteins that regulate the recruitment of mRNAs to the ribosome for translation.  We are using the fruit fly Drosophila to understand the significance of this to germ cell development. The student will conduct molecular genetic research aimed at  understanding the role of one or more of these proteins, focusing on identifying sets of mRNAs that interact specifically with it.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): 50% laboratory performance, 50% final written report
