Term: Summer 2013
Project start date: Monday, June 6, 2013
Project end date: Tuesday, August 6, 2013
Project title: Holographic microscopy of motile organisms
Project description: The student will investigate the swimming behavior of non-hazardous microorganisms using holographic microscopy. This will involve setting up the instrument, growing the organisms, and analyzing the resulting data using holographic deconvolution algorithms. Once the procedure is established, the student will try a variety of organisms with different swimming speeds and types, and also compare these patterns to movement of nonliving particles (beads and sand).
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final grade shall be based on laboratory performance as evaluated by the research supervisor (50%) and the final written research report (maximum 10 pages) graded by the supervisor (50%).
Project status: This project is taken; however students may contact the professor to discuss other possible '396' projects this term.
How students can apply: N/A; this project is filled.
