Project title: Enthalpy and Mechanics of the Three Dimensional Black Hole

Project description (50-100 words suggested): The student will read background literature on black hole mechanics and thermodynamics, and understand the generalization to the grand canonical ensemble of "Enthalpy and the Mechanics of AdS Black Holes" by Kastor, Ray and Traschen. The student will then use this formalism to compute the effective volume of the three dimensional BTZ black hole.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final Report (100%)

Project status: This project is taken; however students may contact the professor to discuss other possible '396' projects this term.
