Project title: Organocatalytic Diels-Alder Reactions

Project description (50-100 words suggested): This project will examine the organocatalysis of Diels-Alder reactions.  Specifically, prior work in this area has established that alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes undergo Diels-Alder cycloadditions using secondary amines as bases.  However, substrates in this reaction are limited to those which lack additional alpha substituents.  Our research group has identified a hydrazide catalyst that initiates Cope rearrangements with sterically hindered enals.  This project will examine the extension of these hydrazide catalysts to the Diels-Alder cycloaddition.

Prerequisite: CHEM 302 + CGPA of 3.0 or higher and permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Laboratory performance (50%); Final report (50%).
