Project title: Characterizing the Poxvirus PACR protein as an oncolytic agent

Project description (50-100 words suggested): This project will study the (Poxvirus Anaphase promoting Complex Regulator) PACR is a protein encoded by some types of poxvirus that encodes a mimetic of the APC subunit APC11. APC11 is a ubiquitin ligase that is required for proper cell cycle progression. PACR displaces APC11 from the complex and directly inhibits the activity of the APC holoenzyme. We have observed that other viral inhibitors of the APC can have powerful oncolytic properties. In the current project the student will evaluate the activity of PACR as an oncolyitc agent by expressing the protein in a panel of tumor cell lines and analyzing effects such as cell cycle arrest, cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.

Grading scheme (The final report must be worth at least 50% of final grade): Final report 50%, Overall lab performance 50%
