Project title: Cardiovascular outcomes in children with obstructive sleep apnea.
Project description: The student will be assessing the state of the cardiovascular system in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The student will conduct a thorough review of the existing literature using various search engines (eg. PubMed, Medicine). The student will participate in the recruitment of patients from the hospital and collect data from CHEAS and other sources. The student will learn to use Endnote and organize the references and printed journal articles by sub-topic and will write brief summaries for each. The student will lead a journal club, where she will gain experience in presenting key points and critically analyzing selected journals. The student will create and enter data into a database in Excel. Student and supervisor will discuss and analyze findings using SPSS. The student will then write a report including a detailed review of the relationship between OSA and the cardiovascular system in children. At the end of the course, the student will present to the course supervisor and colleagues of the sleep laboratory an oral PowerPoint presentation highlighting the following topics of her study. Background: review of the existing literature on cardiovascular outcomes in OSA; Methods: data collection, data analysis; Results of Study; Summary of Conclusions related to the study.
Prerequisite: 1 term completed at McGill + CGPA of 3.0 or higher; or permission of instructor.
