An Astronomer's Window on the Birth of the Universe

Professor Matt Dobbs

Canada Research Chair in Astro-Particle Physics,
Department of Physics

April 9, 2009

Prof. Dobbs will outline the field of cosmology - the quest to understand the birth, evolution, and fate of the universe as a whole. He will summarize the evidence for the Big Bang, and focus on measurements of the relic after-glow of the Big Bang, called the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. While describing the science, he will share some of the adventure associated with working in the field of observational cosmology including telescopes launched aboard stratospheric balloons, on mountaintops 5000m above sea level, and at the South Pole.
