DESCRIPTION:With Marcelo M. Wanderley\, Professor\, Music Technology\, Schu
lich School of Music\, McGill University\n	International Chair\, Inria Lill
e - Nord Europe\, France\n\nMany people today listen to music exclusively
through some digital device: phones\, tablets or computers. In the last fe
w decades\, digital technology has impacted how we compose\, perform\, rec
ord\, distribute and listen to music. Digital technology also has allowed
for completely novel musical styles and instruments to appear. In this tal
k\, Dr. Marcelo Wanderley\, drawing on examples from his interdisciplinary
research in music technology\, will discuss how computing technology invi
tes us to interact with music differently and speculate about how technolo
gy can shape the future of music.\n\nMarcelo M. Wanderley graduated in ele
ctrical engineering at the UFPR and holds a Master’s degree in engineering
from UFSC\, Brazil and a Ph.D. from Université Pierre et Marie Curie and
Ircam\, France. He is Full Professor of Music Technology at McGill Univers
ity\, Canada\, and International Chair at Inria Lille – Nord Europe\, Fran
ce. He is a member of Computer Music Journal’s Editorial Advisory Board an
d a senior member of the ACM and of the IEEE. He co-edited the electronic
book “Trends in Gestural Control of Music”\, 2000\, co-authored the textbo
ok “New Digital Musical Instruments: Control and Interaction Beyond the Ke
yboard”\, 2006\, and chaired the 2003 International Conference on New Inte
