DOCUMENTS: S-03-24 to S-03-31 AC-03-140 Dean Shaver called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m. (1) ADOPTION OF AGENDA Prof. Ewing moved, seconded by Prof. GowriSankaran, that the Agenda be adopted. The motion carried. (2) CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES a) Bachelor of Science S-03-25 602.1 Associate Dean Mendelson mentioned that the number of students graduating in February with a B.Sc. was higher than it had been for a number of years. Associate Dean Mendelson moved, seconded by Prof. GowriSankaran, that the above candidates be recommended to the Senate Steering Committee for the Bachelor of Science degree. The motion carried. b) Diploma in Environment S-03-26 There were no students receiving this Diploma. c) Diploma in Meteorology S-03-27 There were no students receiving this Diploma. Prof. GowriSankaran further moved, seconded by Prof. Barrette, that the Dean be given discretionary power to make such changes in the degree list as would be necessary to prevent injustice. The motion carried. 602.2 Associate Dean Mendelson thanked the advisers in both the Student Affairs Office and in units for their work in preparing the degree lists. (3) MINUTES OF January 13, 2004 S-03-24 Prof. Barrette moved, seconded by Prof. Ewing, that the Minutes be approved. The motion carried. (4) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES There was no business arising from the Minutes. (5) REPORTS OF COMMITTEES a) Academic Committee S-03-28 SECTION A: NEW PROGRAMS None SECTION B: MAJOR PROGRAM CHANGES None SECTION C: NEW COURSES THE FOLLOWING PROPOSAL WAS POSTPONED TO A FUTURE MEETING. (1) SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE - COMP 669D/N CSE Seminar AC-03-133 1 credit (2) PSYCHOLOGY PSYC 488D Special Topics Seminar AC-03-135 3 credits Prof. Baker moved, seconded by Prof. Donderi, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. (3) CHEMISTRY CHEM 688 Assessment AC-03-136 3 credits CHEM 701 Comprehensive Examination 1 AC-03-137 3 credits CHEM 702 Comprehensive Examination 2 AC-03-138 3 credits Associate Dean Burns moved, seconded by Prof. GowriSankaran, that the above courses be adopted. The motion carried. SECTION D: MAJOR COURSE CHANGES None SECTION E: MINOR PROGRAM CHANGES THE FOLLOWING PROPOSAL WAS POSTPONED TO A FUTURE MEETING. (1) SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE - M.Sc. Option in Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) AC-03-134 (2) CHEMISTRY - Ph.D. in Chemistry AC-03-139 Associate Dean Burns moved, seconded by Prof. Schmidt, that the program change be approved. The motion carried. SECTION F: Minor Course Changes & Other (For Information Only) None a) Academic Committee Report (Continued) (i) Expedited Approval of Academic Committee Agenda Items AC-03-140 605.1 Associate Dean Mendelson gave some background information on the proposal. Associate Dean Mendelson moved, seconded by Prof. Levine, that the proposal for expedited approval be adopted. The motion carried. Secretary's Note: Items #1 to #3 will be implemented immediately. Item #4 will be implemented as soon as possible, but no later than September 2004. c) Other Reports or Academic Business (i) Associate Deans Student Affairs and Academic S-03-29 605.2 Dean Shaver said that after consultation with the Chairs' Council, it had been decided to split the post of Associate Dean (Academic & Student Affairs). The duties of the Associate Dean (Student Affairs) and the Associate Dean (Academic) were outlined in document S-03-29. 605.3 Dean Shaver said that he was pleased to announce that Professor Henry Leighton, Department of Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences, would be the Faculty's first Associate Dean (Student Affairs). 605.4 Dean Shaver briefly described Prof. Leighton's qualifications and ccomplishments. 605.5 Dean Shaver said that Professor Morton Mendelson, the current Associate Dean (Academic & Student Affairs) would become the Faculty's first Associate Dean (Academic). 605.6 Dean Shaver described some of the contributions to the Faculty Associate Dean Mendelson had made over the years, and said that the Faculty greatly appreciated Associate Dean Mendelson becoming Associate Dean (Academic). (ii) Notice of Motion to amend the Constitution of the Faculty of Science S-03-30 605.7 The actual Motion will be considered at the Faculty meeting of March 9, 2004. 605.8 Dean Shaver said that the changes to be made to the Constitution reflected the new posts of Associate Dean (Academic) and Associate Dean (Student Affairs). (iii) Planning Update S-03-31 605.9 Dean Shaver said that an announcement had been sent out informing members that documents relating to the Strategic Planning Exercise were now available on the Web. Feedback was being sought from members. He said that announcements will be sent out in the future as further documents are posted. 605.10 Dean Shaver said that feedback was supposed to be obtained from the Administration regarding the preliminary report. This would result in the production of a second report and further feedback, with a final report due by the end of the academic year. The timetable was important because of the budgetary implications of the report. (6) DEAN'S BUSINESS There was no DeanÂ’s business. (7) REPORT ON ACTIONS OF SENATE The report of Prof. E. Meighen (Senate Meeting of January 21, 2004) will be given at a future meeting. (8) MEMBERS' QUESTION PERIOD There were no membersÂ’ questions.
