COLLEEN BRONSON 705.1 Associate Dean Mendelson introduced the issue of split internship programs. IYES is a program whereby a student can take an eight-month to 16-month internship in a work setting related to his/her area of study. These internships are mainly followed by students in the School of Computer Science and in the Faculty of Engineering, although there are internship programs for other departments in the Faculty of Science. It had already been agreed that an eight-month internship could be split into two four-month summer periods, with the assumption being that the two periods would take place in the same company; this split would be more suitable for students. However, companies were reluctant to commit for the second summer. 705.2 The question for the Academic Committee to consider was whether or not having a split internship in two different companies in two summers was different from an eight-month period in one work setting. If the Academic Committee did consider it to be different, then there would be a second question of whether or not working in two different companies would be an appropriate work arrangement for the IYES Program in the Faculty of Science. 705.3 Ms. Bronson said that she was trying to work out ways to replicate the success of the IYES Program for Computer Science and Engineering students, with regard to students from other Science departments. She said the COOP experience was one model that could work. 705.4 Following a long discussion, the Academic Committee agreed by unanimous vote to support the concept of splitting an eight-month IYES internship into two four- month summer periods, even if the periods were to take place in different companies. This split could possibly be expanded in the future to include other portions of the year. 705.5 Dean Shaver said that the split would be revisited in two years, to see how it has worked.
