The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 21, 1999 - Minute 110.1, Use of the Harpp-Hogan Program in the Faculty of Science 202.1 Associate Dean Mendelson said this item had been postponed from the Academic Committee Meeting of September 21, 1999. However, since that time, Senate had passed a resolution defining how students were to be informed of the Harpp-Hogan Program. Also, the Committee on Student Affairs (CSA) was due to discuss the program, with the aim of producing a protocol defining how it would be used. Associate Dean Mendelson said he had been involved in the CSA process, and felt it would be more appropriate to postpone the issue once more, until after the process had been worked out by CSA. BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES OF MAY 4, 1999 - Minute 904.1, 904.2, Psychology 204-536B (AC-98-135[Revised]) 202.2 Associate Dean Mendelson said that at the Academic Committee meeting of May 4, 1999, this course had been tabled to a future meeting because of questions concerning the prerequisites. He said the prerequisites had now been modified. Prof. Damha moved, seconded by Prof. Cline, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. (3) MCGILL COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL (MCI) - PROPOSED BA (for information) AC-99-56/AC-99-56(Revised) 203.1 Dean Shaver said that the original intention had been for the above proposal to be presented to the Academic Committee by Prof. Storrs McCall and some others. However, due to the number of items to be considered in time for the Calendar, the MCI proposal would be presented at the next Academic Committee meeting (November 23, 1999). Dean Shaver said he would like to draw the item to members' attention, and he recommended that members read it. (4) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-99-13 (for information) (5) AD HOC MAJOR IN PHARMACOLOGY AC-99-14 Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Cline, that the ad hoc program for Ms. Kamila Premji be adopted. 205.1 Concern was raised that there was not sufficient Pharmacology content in the above program to justify it being a Major in Pharmacology; in content it was similar to what a Faculty Program in Biochemistry with a Minor in Pharmacology would be. Vote: 5 In favour 8 Against The motion was defeated. (6) SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE - B.Sc. Joint Major in Computer Science and Music (New) AC-99-15/AC-99-15(Revised) 206.1 Prof. Merrett introduced the proposal and said the Faculty of Music was in the process of approving it. 206.2 Associate Dean Mendelson suggested that (1) the title of the program be changed to B.Sc. Joint Major in Computer Science and Music Technology, (2) a timetable for each year be put together, and (3) the program proposal be formatted according to SCTP's guidelines. After some discussion, Prof. Merrett moved, seconded by Prof. Yau, that the program be adopted. The motion carried. - Graduate Diploma in Information Technology AC-99-16 206.3 Prof. Merrett introduced the proposal and said that Dr. Charles Snow was present to answer members' questions. He said the course numbers accompanying the diploma program could possibly change to more suitable Continuing Education course numbers. He said that the courses had a credit weight of two, with three hours of lectures per week over a nine-week term. Prof. Merrett moved, seconded by Mr. Tsimiklis, that the program be adopted. The motion carried. However, he said it was highly unlikely that students with a degree in Computer Science would be interested in the program. 206.6 Associate Dean Mendelson said that the prerequsites for the program should be stated in the course proposals, and that the course descriptions in the course proposal forms should be better presented. 206.7 In response to a question, Prof. Snow said it had not been discussed whether students who had passed a number of computer science courses would be given exemptions from some of the program courses. 206.8 It was pointed out that there were no topics addressing biotechnology or legal issues. 206.9 Prof. Snow said that so far there were no specific course offerings in these areas. However, students could take electives. 206.10 Associate Dean Mendelson said consultation documentation with other units was needed before the proposal was moved further. Prof. Merrett moved, seconded by Prof. Wechsler, that the courses be adopted. The motion carried. 206.11 Dean Shaver congratulated the School of Computer Science on two new and very innovative programs.
