(1) MINUTES OF DECEMBER 9, 1997 AC-97-99 Prof. Wechsler moved, seconded by Prof. Yau, that the minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES Minute 414.2, Report: IYES Program 502.1 With regard to the Academic Committee's suggestion concerning the actual number of students applying for internship programs, Associate Dean de Takacsy said this information was not easily retrievable, since the IYES Office does not have a database system. He said he would inform members once this information becomes available. Minute 415.3, Biology 177-453B [AC-97-98(Revised)] 502.2 Prof. Pasztor reported that the corequisite courses for 177-453B (183-4XX and 336-4XX) had been approved at the departmental level only. 502.3 Dean Shaver said that a more detailed and complete report should accompany this course in order to deal with any number of possible issues, such as: (1) how are the resources to be assembled for this course? (2) liability and safety issues, (3) the overall design of the course (4) the philosophy behind the course, etc. Even if a given faculty is required to approve only one course out of a package, Dean Shaver said that the entire package should be presented. With regard to the approval process, it would be necessary to explain the course and its relationship to other components of the package to various bodies (Academic Committee, Faculty, NRCP, Senate). 502.4 Prof. Pasztor said Prof. Potvin had produced a full description of this package for the departmental discussion. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-97-100 (for information) (4) BIOLOGY 177-313B Structure and Function of Cells 3 credits AC-97-101 Change in seminar hours. Prof. Pasztor moved, seconded by Associate Dean de Takacsy, that the change be approved. The motion carried. 177-350A Insect Biology and Control 3 credits AC-97-102 Change in course description. Prof. Pasztor moved, seconded by Prof. Baker, that the change be approved. The motion carried. 177-373A Biostatistical Analysis AC-97-103 3 credits Change in course description. 504.1 After some discussion concerning the equivalency of Biology 177-373 and Mathematics & Statistics 189-203 and 204, it was agreed that the following statement would be placed in the Calendar, page S-5, Faculty of Science General Information Section, Course Overlap: 504.2 Students who have taken 189-203 and 189-204 or their equivalents will not be allowed to take 177-373 for credit. Prof. Pasztor moved, seconded by Prof. Wechsler, that the change be approved. The motion carried. The motion carried. (6) PHYSICS - Joint Major in Atmospheric Sciences & Physics (Regular Program & Internship Option)AC-97-105 Associate Dean de Takacsy moved, seconded by Prof. Drury, that the change in names of the above programs be approved. The motion carried. - Physics Honours AC-97-106 Prof. Drury moved, seconded by Prof. Baker, that the change be approved. The motion carried. (7) ARTS MINOR CONCENTRATIONS FOR SCIENCE STUDENTS (Approved by APPC - AC-97-107) - Canadian Ethnic Studies AC-97-108 507.1 Seeing as there were no documents describing the proposed Canadian Ethnic Studies Minor Concentration, Associate Dean Norris moved, seconded by Prof. Pasztor, that this item be postponed to the next Academic Committee Meeting on February 10, 1998. The motion carried. (8) GEOGRAPHY 183-203 Environmental Systems AC-97-109 3 credits Changes in title & course description. 508.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy moved, seconded by Mr. Aggarwal, that the course title be approved, but that "Intro to" be removed from the original submission, subject to approval from the Department of Geography. The motion carried. 183-372 Running Water Environments AC-97-110 3 credits Changes in title, pre/corequisites, & course description. Prof. Yau moved, seconded by Prof. Baker, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. Program Retirement: - BSc Joint Major in Geography & Environmental Sciences AC-97-111 Prof. Baker moved, seconded by Prof. Pasztor, that the program be retired. The motion carried. 508.2 In response to a question from Prof. Baker concerning submission of program change forms for the retirement of joint major programs in environmental sciences, Dean Shaver said that individual departments should submit forms for retiring their contributions to the environmental sciences program. (9) OTHER BUSINESS - BIOLOGY 177-462B Evolution of Life Histories AC-97-112 (originally MCC-97-16) 3 credits Changes in title & prequisites. 509.1 After some discussion concerning the lengthy course description and the prerequisites, Mr. Aggarwal moved, seconded by Associate Dean Norris, that the above course be tabled until the next Academic Committee meeting, February 10, 1998.
