DOCUMENTS: AC-96-44 (Correspondence) AC-96-56 to AC-96-74 On behalf of Dean Shaver, Associate Dean de Takacsy called the meeting to order at 3:04 p.m. (1) MINUTES OF JANUARY 21, 1997 AC-96-56 601.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy pointed out that in Minute 503.1, the last line should read: îonly certain biology students.î Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the amended minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES Minute 504.1 AC-96-44 (Correspondence) 602.1 With regard to questions raised by the Academic Committee on January 21, 1997, concerning the Minor in Pharmacology, Associate Dean de Takacsy read out the reply (document AC-96-44 {Correspondence}) from the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics. 602.2 Associate Dean de Takacsy also reported that the Minor in Pharmacology had been approved at the Faculty of Science meeting on February 18, 1997. He said that Faculty had recommended that the list of suggested courses on page 2 of document AC-96-44 be removed from the document, because it was felt that such courses should not be part of the approval process. Minute 506.2, Biology 177-274A 602.3 Associate Dean de Takacsy suggested that this item be postponed until the next Academic Committee meeting, since Dean Shaver could not be present at the current meeting, and, furthermore, Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, student representative, had raised additional concerns (document AC-96-74, tabled) regarding the retirement of Biology 177-274A. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-96-57 (for information) (4) CHEMISTRY New Courses: 180-112B General Chemistry Laboratory AC-96-58 1 credit 180-113B General Chemistry (PSE) AC-96-59 1 credit 180-122A General Chemistry Laboratory AC-96-60 1 credit 180-123A General Chemistry Laboratory (PSE) AC-96-61 1 credit 180-224A/B Organic Chemistry Laboratory I AC-96-62 1 credit Prof. Reven moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the above courses be adopted. The motion carried. New Course 180-574B Optical Methods and Materials in Chemistry AC-96-63 3 credits Prof. Grutter said that the proposed Chemistry course 180-574B could potentially overlap with an existing Physics course. During a telephone conversation between Prof. Andrews and Prof. Grutter, it had been suggested that 180-574B could be taught as proposed for 1997-98, but that the Chemistry and Physics instructors should collaborate in the following year in rearranging and adjusting the course topics, teaching, etc. Prof. Grutter also suggested discussions take place with Faculty of Engineering, since Engineering also offers courses in this general area. Prof. Reven moved, seconded by Prof. Brawer, that the above course be adopted. The motion carried. New Courses: 180-608A Current Topics in Physical Chemistry AC-96-64 4 credits 180-609A Current Topics in Physical Chemistry AC-96-65 4 credits Prof. Reven moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the above courses be adopted. The motion carried. (5) EARTH AND PLANETARY SCIENCES - Major, Honours in Earth Sciences & Honours in Planetary Sciences AC-96-66 186-480D Honours Research Project AC-96-67 6 credits Change of credit weight from 9. Prof. Paquette said that the proposed changes were due to the loss of faculty members. 605.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that the university has an obligation to students to adhere to what is published in the Calendar, and that the department should take this into account. For advising purposes, Associate Dean de Takacsy said that the advisors in the Student Affairs Office should be informed of the changes. Prof. Paquette moved, seconded by Prof. Silvius, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. (6) EDUCATION 434-392B(Nutrition & Wellness) & DIETETICS & HUMAN NUTRITION 382-307B(Human Nutrition) AC-96-68 (for information) 606.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy asked representatives, especially Biomedical representatives, to inform their departmental advisors and student associations about the changes in status for 434-392B and 382-307B. (7) INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PROPOSAL AC-96-69 607.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that foreign students could participate in the program and earn money, if the work was part of the program requirement. He raised the issue of whether credits could be given for part of the program (replacing for example the senior thesis, an independent studies project, etc.), if the internship had an academic value as well. He asked members for their comments. 607.2 Some discussion followed. Associate Dean de Takacsy said that he would like members to take the issue back to their departments and to contact him soon if interested in designing a proposal. Proposals would then be brought to a future Academic Committee meeting. 607.3 A IYES (Internship Year for Engineering and Science) pamphlet will be distributed to Academic Committee members. (8) MUSIC - Minor in Music AC-96-70 - Minor in Music Technology AC-96-71 608.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that the Minor in Music had already been approved for students in the Faculty of Arts, and the Minor in Music Technology had been approved for students in the Faculty of Music. Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Silvius, that the two Minor programs be adopted. The motion carried. (9) COURSE APPROVAL PROCEDURE-MEDICINE AC-96-72 609.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that the above document was in response to document AC-96-6 (revised), Approval Procedures for Undergraduate Courses Offered by Units in Medicine. 609.2 Prof. Brawer said that the members of the Biomedical Sciences Curriculum Review & Planning Committee were: Profs. A. Shrier (Chair), R.E. MacKenzie, J. Brawer, N. Acheson, and P. Holland. (10) AD HOC JOINT MAJOR PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS & NEUROSCIENCE AC-96-73 Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Wechsler, that the above ad hoc program for Ms. R. Achtman be adopted. The motion carried. (11) OTHER BUSINESS There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 4:06 p.m.
