DOCUMENTS: AC-96-39A AC-96-42 to AC-96-55 Dean Shaver called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. (1) MINUTES OF DECEMBER 10, 1996 AC-96-42 Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Sittmann, that the minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES There was no business arising from the minutes. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-96-43 (for information) 503.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy pointed out that there were a number of course retirements from the Department of Biology, and that some of these courses had been considered minor changes in the sense that they affect only certain students. (4) MINOR PROGRAM IN PHARMACOLOGY AC-96-44 504.1 During the discussion, it was asked whether the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics would eventually offer additional courses in order to provide more flexibility in the minor program, and whether 549- 300A and 549-301B should be listed as prerequisite courses for 549-562A and 549-563B in future editions of the Calendar. Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the program be adopted. The motion carried. (5) EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE New Course AC-96-39A 516-512D Recent Progress in AIDS Research 6 credits Prof. Andrews moved, seconded by Prof. Brawer, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. (6) BIOLOGY Course Retirement (Postponed to Feb. Academic Committee mtg): 177-274A General Genetics AC-96-53 3 credits 506.1 Concerns were raised about the large number of students from different departments who would be affected by the proposed retirement. The enrolment in 177-202 would swell to over 600 students, and since 177-202 would be offered in only one term, students might have scheduling problems. 506.2 During the discussion, Dean Shaver mentioned the Joint Science-Medicine Life Sciences Curriculum Coordination Committee, the mandate of which is to coordinate the teaching of biological sciences between the Faculties of Medicine and of Science. Prof. Silvius moved, seconded by Prof. Andrews, that the course be brought back to the Academic Committee meeting in February. The motion carried. New Course 177-413A/B/C/L/T Reading Project AC-96-45 1 credit Prof. Sittmann moved, seconded by Prof. Grutter, that the course be adopted. The motion carried. 506.3 Associate Dean de Takacsy pointed out that there was a need for one-credit courses, for those students who required only one credit to graduate; such courses should be academically satisfactory. New Course 177-505B Diversity and Systematics Seminar AC-96-46 3 credits Change to Document AC-96-46: Items #8b and #8c should have read: 8b) Seminar = 2 hours/week 8c) Research/Reading project = 6 hours/week Prof. Sittmann moved, seconded by Prof. Wechsler, that the course be adopted. (10) OTHER BUSINESS 510.1 Dean Shaver said that there were two additional course proposals from the School of Computer Science. He asked members whether they wished to consider the documents that had been tabled.
