(5) AD HOC MINOR IN CHEMISTRY AC-96-38 (Not Approved) 405.1 Concerns were raised by members that the minor discipline (Chemistry) was too close in subject matter to the major discipline (in this case, Biochemistry). A number of members felt that approval of this minor would set a precedent for minor/major combinations in very closely related fields. Prof. Franklin moved, seconded by Prof. Doig, that the ad hoc Minor for Mr. Shin Numao be approved. Vote: For 6 Against 7 Abstention 1 The motion failed. (6) EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE AC-96-39 New Course (Referred Back to Department): 516-512D Recent Progress in AIDS Research 6 credits 406.1 There was some discussion with regard to the lack of prerequisites/corequisites, and the extremely broad scope of the course. Questions were raised concerning the types of students the course would attract. Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Sittmann, that the course be referred back to the Department of Experimental Medicine for further information. The motion carried. (7) MINOR IN NORTHERN STUDIES AC-96-40 (for information) 407.1 It was pointed out that the above Minor had been a very popular program in the past, but that no new students had registered since 1994. It seems that there has been an increased interest in the Minor in Environmental Studies, at the expense of the Minor in Northern Studies. It was suggested that the Minor in Northern Studies could be the basis for a domain in the McGill School of Environment.
