DOCUMENTS: AC-96-20 to AC-96-34 Dean Shaver called the meeting to order at 2:35 p.m. (1) MINUTES OF OCTOBER 22, 1996 AC-96-20 Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Pollard, that the minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES Minute 206.1 - Residence and Program Requirements (B.Sc. Degree)(AC-96-17) 302.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy reported that the Residence and Program Requirements had been adopted at the Faculty of Science meeting on November 12, 1996. Minutes of the Academic Committee meeting held on January 23, 1996, AC-95-142, Page 6, Minute 506.4 302.2 Associate Dean de Takacsy reported that APPC had considered the proposal from the School of Computer Science to join the Faculty of Science, and has agreed to recommend the transfer at a future Senate meeting. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-96-21 (for information) (4) MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS - Project Master's in Mathematics & Statistics AC-96-22 (New Program) 304.1 Prof. Rigelhof said that in document AC-96-22, #2, New Program Description, the second sentence should be replaced with the following: 'Most graduate courses in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics carry a weight of 4 credits. Students would usually take 8 courses for up to 32 credits.' 304.2 Associate Dean de Takacsy mentioned that according to the Faculty of Graduate Studies & Research, the standard title used for this type of program should be: 'Master's in Mathematics and Statistics (Project Option)' Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Doig, that the program, including the above two amendments, be adopted. The motion carried. 189-600A/B/C/L/T Master's Thesis Research I AC-96-23 (Corrected from: Master's Project Research II) 6 credits Change in restriction. Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Grutter, that the change be approved. The motion carried. New Courses: 189-640A/B/C/L/T Master's Project Research I AC-96-24 6 credits 189-641A/B/C/L/T Master's Project Research II AC-96-25 9 credits Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Ingram, that the courses be adopted. The motion carried. - Thesis Master's in Mathematics and Statistics AC-96-26 Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Ms. Waluzyniec, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. 304.3 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that most -500 and -600 level courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics carry a weight of 4 credits, and added that the Academic Committee may or may not wish to think of making course credits uniform across the Faculty. - B.Sc./B.A. Major in Mathematics AC-96-27 Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. ThÇrien, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. Course Retirements: 189-335A/B/C/L/T Basic Algebra II AC-96-28 3 credits 189-336A/B/C/L/T Linear Algebra II AC-96-29 3 credits Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. ThÇrien, that the courses be retired. The motion carried. (5) AD HOC JOINT MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS AND BIOLOGY AC-96-30 Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Silvius, that the ad hoc joint major program for Mr. Shane Jensen be approved. The motion carried. (6) AD HOC MINOR IN ENVIRONMENTAL FORESTRY AC-96-31 Prof. Sittmann moved, seconded by Prof. Norris, that the ad hoc minor program for Ms. Erika Marzinotto be approved. The motion carried. (7) REPORT: FACULTY OF ARTS CURRICULUM REFORM AC-96-32 (for information) 307.1 Document AC-96-32 is a portion of the minutes from the Faculty of Arts meeting of October 24, 1996. This portion concerns curriculum reform in the Faculty of Arts. The report that was being considered at this Faculty of Arts meeting had been previously circulated for information to the Academic Committee as document AC-96-18. (8) OTHER BUSINESS 308.1 Dean Shaver reminded members that documents should be submitted seven working days prior to each Academic Committee meeting. He asked members whether they wished to consider the documents that had been tabled (AC-96-33 and AC-96-34). The Academic Committee members agreed to consider these documents. - Course Restrictions AC-96-33 308.2 After a short discussion, it was agreed that the wording in document AC-96-33, line 2, should read: '.... students with only practical or professional training in specific ....' Prof. Rigelhof moved, seconded by Prof. Therien, that the amended Course Restrictions be approved. The motion carried. - Minor in Management AC-96-34 Associate Dean de Takacsy moved, seconded by Prof. Sittmann, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 3:28 p.m.
