AC-96-12 FACULTY OF SCIENCE ACADEMIC COMMITTEE Minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday, September 17, 1996 at 3:00 p.m. in the Arts Council Room (160). PRESENT: Dean Shaver (Chair), Associate Dean de Takacsy (Vice-Chair), Professors Andrews, Baines, Brawer, Franklin, Grutter, Ingram, Paquette, Pollard, Rigelhof, Silvius, Sittmann, Therien, Wechsler; H. Waluzyniec; J. D'Amico. REGRETS: Prof. E. Norris; Mr. Crawford. DOCUMENTS: AC-95-172 AC-96-1 to AC-96-11 After Dean Shaver called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m., he welcomed the members of the Academic Committee to the meeting. Dean Shaver informed members that there was a new representative from the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Eric Norris. He said that Prof. Norris was unable to attend the present meeting due to a conflict. Dean Shaver announced that in the future the Academic Committee minutes would be shorter, and would be more in the form of actions taken. He said that this was due to budget cuts, which necessitated streamlining procedures. Dean Shaver said that the Academic Committee tapes would be maintained for two to three months after each meeting, and that any errors in the minutes should be brought forward. (1) MINUTES OF MAY 7, 1996. AC-95-172 Prof. Brawer moved, seconded by Prof. Pollard, that the above minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES There was no business arising from the minutes. (3) REPORT ON MINOR COURSE CHANGES AC-96-1 (for information) 103.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy said that procedures regarding course and program changes would be circulated to members. (4) MINOR PROGRAMS: AC-96-2 - African Studies - Art History - Canadian Ethnic Studies - Canadian Studies - International Development Studies - Social Studies in Medicine 104.1 Dean Shaver reminded members of the approval procedures for existing minor programs in the Faculty of Arts that had not been formally approved for Science students (Academic Committee meeting of April 23, 1996, Minute #705.3-705.9). Prof. Andrews moved, seconded by Prof. Rigelhof, that the above minor programs be adopted for students in the Faculty of Science. The motion carried. (5) AD HOC JOINT HONOURS PROGRAM IN COMPUTER SCIENCE & NEUROSCIENCE AC-96-3 Prof. Therien moved, seconded by Prof. Grutter, that the ad hoc joint honours program for Mr.J. Erlich be approved. The motion carried. (6) MICROBIOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY - Temporary Program Revision AC-96-4 106.1 Prof. Baines explained the changes in program requirements for the 1996-97 academic year for returning students in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. In reply to Prof. Andrews, Prof. Baines said that the department was working out strategies to successfully implement a laboratory course for the 1997-98 academic year. Prof. Baines moved, seconded by Prof. Sittmann, that the above changes be approved. The motion carried. New Course: 528-5XXB Seminar on Inflammatory Processes AC-96-5 3 credits 106.2 In reply to Associate Dean de Takacsy, Prof. Baines said that Experimental Medicine 516-606B would be deleted. Prof. Baines moved, seconded by Prof. Andrews, that the above course be adopted. The motion carried. (7) CURRICULUM COORDINATION (Science,Medicine,and Agricultural & Environmental Sciences) 107.1 Dean Shaver announced that the deans of the Faculties of Medicine and of Science, along with the chairs of the Departments of Biology and Biochemistry had appointed a small group to coordinate curriculum changes in the life sciences area. (8) COURSE APPROVALS: Departments/Units in the Faculty of Medicine (-100 to -500 level courses [non-professional courses]) AC-96-6 108.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy introduced the document regarding undergraduate course approvals for "non- basic science" departments in the Faculty of Medicine (AC-96-6), and said that there was no formal undergraduate committee approving such courses at the -100 to -500 level in the Faculty of Medicine. He said that these courses would in future be listed in the Science section of the Calendar, which would allow more visibility than the Health Sciences Calendar. There has been consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, and the Faculty of Medicine. The following ammendment was proposed for document #AC-96-6: "The courses offered in the basic science departments (Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology, and Physiology) will be routed as usual directly to the Faculty of Science." Prof. Ingram moved, seconded by Prof. Grutter, that the course approval procedures, with the amendment, be adopted. The motion carried. (9) EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE (for information) New Courses: 516-510A Bioanalytical Separation Methods AC-96-7 3 credits 516-511A Joint Venturing with Industry AC-96-8 3 credits (10) ACCORD-CADRE FRANCO-QUEBECOIS ENTRE CPU, CDEFI & CREPUQ and PAN-CANADIAN PROTOCOL ON THE TRANSFERABILITY OF UNIVERSITY CREDITS AC-96-9 (for information) 110.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy introduced the above documents and said that Academic Committee members should be aware of them. He said he had contacted the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research to ensure that students who should be registered in that Faculty would in fact be so registered, e.g. students with a "licence" from France. (11) OTHER BUSINESS - BSc/BEd DEGREE PROGRAM DESIGNATION AC-96-10 Major in "Subject 1" and "Subject 2" for Teachers Prof. Grutter moved, seconded by Prof. Andrews, that the above degree designation be adopted. The motion carried. - ENROLMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 1996 AC-96-11 111.1 Associate Dean de Takacsy introduced document #AC- 96-11, and said that this year enrolment at McGill had decreased by about 5%. Over the past couple of years other universities have also seen decreases in enrolment. 111.2 Dean Shaver said that during the past summer the Faculty had made an effort to contact students to follow up on acceptances. This effort was successful. He said that this opened the question about recruiting at McGill, and that it was clear that the Faculty would be taking a much more active role in recruiting in the future. Dean Shaver said that follow-up on acceptances was very important, and may well be formalized in future. The meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
