Chemical Society Seminar: Mark MacLachlan - New Materials from Cellulose Nanocrystals

22 Jan 2019 13:00
14:30
Abstract:

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can be extracted from biomass, including cotton and wood pulp. The resulting CNCs form stable colloidal suspensions in water and also organize into a chiral nematic liquid crystal when concentrated above ~4 wt% in water. This chiral nematic organization is retained in dried films of CNCs, giving films with bright, iridescent colors.[1]

Title: Learning mixtures of Gaussians

Abstract:

Distribution learning lies at the intersection of statistics, theoretical computer science and machine learning. We give an overview of this area, with the problem of learning mixtures of high-dimensional Gaussians as a running example. In particular, we prove nearly tight sample complexity bounds for this problem in the density estimation model.

Title: Geometry of the smallest 1-form Laplacian eigenvalue on hyperbolic manifolds.

Abstract:

I’ll describe a relationship between the smallest 1-form Laplacian eigenvalue λ _1* and surface complexity on hyperbolic manifolds.

Using this relationship, we’ll discuss ‘surface theft’, a prospect for proving good lower bounds on λ _1*(M) for big congruence arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds M.

This is joint work with Mark Stern.

Quantitative Approaches to Understanding and Optimizing Oncolytic Viral Therapy

We use a mathematical model to study the importance of tumour-immune interaction in disease progression and model viral therapy- a recently developed therapeutic technique. We characterize the importance of immune involvement in long-term treatment outcomes and, through a virtual clinical trial, optimize treatment scheduling.
