Professor Amanda Vincent, has been named La Presse Personality of the Year in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology category. Vincent has established an international reputation as a marine life conservationist specializing in work with seahorses. Vincent was honoured as Personnalité de l'Année by Université Laval rector François Tavenas, president of the paper's selection committee, at La Presse's Gala Excellence 2000 on October 9.

Professor Michael Petrides, head of the Cognitive Neuroscience Unit at the Montreal Neurological Institute, has earned a James S. McDonnell Award. The prizes, which can be worth up to $450,000, go to leading researchers in cognitive neuroscience. Petrides studies the neural activity underlying working memory monitoring and has demonstrated the disruptive effects of lesions in the mid-dorsolateral frontal cortex on working memory.

Principal Bernard Shapiro has been selected as the chair-designate for the Canadian Bureau for International Education. After serving a one-year term beginning next month, Shapiro will be the CBIE's chair in November 2001. The CBIE is an Ottawa-based national association of colleges, universities, school boards, training agencies and private corporations that promotes the two-way flow of students and learners across national borders.

Professor Murray Douglas, from the Department of Chemical Engineering, received two awards at the recent International Drying Symposium in Holland. Douglas and Dr. S.J. Hashemi won the award for best paper published in Drying Technology Journal over the past two years. Douglas also received the new Jukka Lehtinen Memorial Prize for "outstanding innovation or research in drying technology for the paper industry."
