Trauma and Transformation: The Catholic Church and the Sexual Abuse Crisis

For various reasons, the Catholic Church has emerged as the critical “case study” for the sexual abuse of minors and children within institutional settings. As this crisis unfolds, a wealth of data as well as psychological, ethical, legal, historical, and sociological analysis has been generated. This conference zeros in on these developments and attempts to glean the lessons learned from the trauma of, and evolving responses to, the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. Salt and Light Productions has produced a DVD documentary of the Trauma and Transformation conference. Recent decades have brought an increased awareness of the role that religion plays in the cultural, social and political dynamics of both local and world affairs. The “resurgence” of religion in the public sphere calls for a reconsideration of how we define 'secular', as well as pointing to a need to revisit theories of secularism and the dominant 'modes of secularism' in the public sphere. Charles Taylor and Jose Casanova are two of the leading scholars in the field of social sciences who are challenging these issues and ideas.
