Natural language processing in the medical field: CRIM’S projects and tools

Pierre-Andre Menard (Computer Research Institute of Montreal)
Tuesday January 22, 12-1pm
Montreal Neurological Institute, DeGrandpre Communications Centre

Abstract: Natural language processing is of special interest in the medical domain as it can be applied to both the research and clinical dimensions due to the volume of text involved. Advances in natural language processing can thus impact the researcher, the clinician and the patient by providing easier access to structured knowledge from unstructured or semi-structured sources. This presentation aims to give a quick overview of the NLP and machine learning diversity of applications in the medical field. In addition, use cases of projects and technologies developed by CRIM’s Speech and Text team will be presented to translate the overview in real-world examples.
