Subject:               Post Graduate Program Director

Dear Colleagues,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Leon Tourian has been appointed as Post Graduate Program Director for the Department of Psychiatry, effective July 1, 2015.

Dr. Tourian joined the Department of Psychiatry in 2014 as an Assistant Professor and has been collaborating with both residents and training directors in his leadership role as Chair of the Selection Committee and Career Development for our Residency Program.

Dr. Tourian obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from Laval University and comes from an impressive pre-medical school background, having completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at McGill. He completed his Residency and a two-year fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology with a sub-specialization in Pain Psychiatry at McGill. His main academic and clinical interests are Pain Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and his clinical practice is based at the Montreal General Hospital.

Dr. Tourian brings with him great experience in management, having held many leadership roles as a resident and chaired many committees: he has served as Vice-President Committee of Resident Wellness (ARM) and Comité du Bien-Être du Résident (CBER, FMRQ), headed the MPRA and acted as Chief Resident of our department at the MUHC for two years.  Dr. Tourian has been involved in education, research, leadership and resident wellness over the course of his residency and fellowship and we are delighted to have him take on this appointment.

I would also like to express my appreciation to Dr. Karl Looper for his hard work and outstanding service as Post Graduate Program Director, a role he took on with stamina, compassion and dedication.

Under his leadership, both of our postgraduate education programs received full accreditation status from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2013 and the surveyors were extremely impressed with the quality of our residents and commitment to educational excellence.  We owe much of this success to Dr. Looper and wish him the very best in his position as Chief of Psychiatry at the Jewish General Hospital.

Sincerely,

Gustavo Turecki

Chair
